Naval Architect

Location: Portsmouth

Salary: Competitive 

 

Would you like to play a key role in the Design Services Naval Architecture team helping to provide solutions in support of the Royal Navy (RN) surface fleet worldwide? We currently have a vacancy for a Naval Architect at our site in Portsmouth. 

As a Naval Architect, you will be responsible for providing naval architecture capability across a broad spectrum of projects across many platforms and vessels including the Queen Elizabeth Carrier and will be working in close collaboration with Design Engineering and the MOD.

This role is suitable for entry level graduates who are looking to develop a career in this area and will offer excellent career progression and support to achieve Chartership status.

 

Your main responsibilities as a Naval Architect will involve: 

Structural designs for ship capability upgrades using a mixture of:

•           linear and non-linear FEA

•           Time-domain dynamic FEA

•           Theoretical methods

•           Classification Society standards and requirements

 

Demonstrating Ship stability safety:

•           Conducting inclining experiments to MoD standards

•           Performing stability analysis and standards compliance

•           Compiling stability books and operator guidance to MoD standards

 

Dry-docking consultancy:

•           Generating technical information to allow safe docking of ships

•           Dock infrastructure studies – caissons, dock furniture, dock capacity

•           Overseeing dry docking of ships

 

Supporting ship refits at the waterfront by providing engineering knowledge

You will be self-motivated and proactive with an ability to work independently as well as within a team. You will have excellent communication skills and able to understand and explain technical information to others.

Additional

Your skills and qualifications as a Naval Architect:

Essential:

Degree/MEng in Naval Architecture, /Marine Technology/Ship Science

Desirable:

Experience of CAD software such as AutoCAD, Inventor

Structural analysis, both theoretical and ideally using FEA, preferably ANSYS Workbench

Familiarity of naval architectural software, preferably PARAMARINE

Understanding of the whole ship engineering design process

Understanding of the hydro mechanic aspects of surface ship design, principally stability
